Go Mighty’s 31 Days of Inspiring Women, #10: Lauren Randolph

Meet Lauren, a creative portrait photographer based out of Los Angeles, also known as “Lauren Lemon.” She’s inspired by vibrant characters and bold personalities - but whether it is a staged shoot or a candid moment, she always shoots from her colorful perspective of the world. In 2011 Randolph was named one of Photoboite’s 30 Under 30 Women Photographers, and was on Mashable’s list of the Top 15 Instagram Photographers. Her art has been published and exhibited internationally. We highly suggest following her adventures - she’s “laurenlemon” on just about everything from Twitter to Flickr to Instagram.

We couldn’t wait to learn a bit more about Lauren and what’s inspired her life and projects so far. Read her story and Life List below.

So, Lauren, what’s your story?

I was born and raised in Reno, Nevada, and didn’t leave until I graduated college. I relocated to Los Angeles, where I’m still currently living and working as a fulltime freelancer.

I’ve always been inspired by my friends and surroundings. I feel that California, and the people here have been really great for me. I love living in a big city, but I’ve realized how important spending time outdoors is to me - everything from the beach, to the desert, camping, and hikes are just a short drive away.

My parents always told me to do what I love, and that as long as I was happy - they were happy. I haven’t always known I’ve wanted to be a photographer, but I’ve always been the person who carries a camera everywhere I go, and I’ve always been a big dreamer.

I studied Art and Photography in school, and began working for the various publications and freelance jobs I could find in Reno. I originally went to school for journalism, because I knew I wanted to work in advertising or for magazines. I soon realized that it was the art side of all that I was drawn to, and most specifically the pictures that made those ads and articles. Since moving to Los Angeles I’ve been fortunate enough to support myself fully off freelance jobs, I want to continue doing that - but with better and more work. There’s still those dream jobs out there, and while I love the work I’ve done and am doing, I hope to always be reaching for higher.

Tell us a bit more about these ten goals from your life list. What’s the inspiration behind the goals you chose?

My life list is a little bit of the small things that would be good for me now, and important career goals to work towards.

Since I work from home, my personal surroundings are important for me. I’m also finally at that age where my body is telling me I really need to keep it active, so swimming and biking are going to become my new favorite pastimes. I am my happiest when I’m busy with projects, working on jobs, planning personal shoots. I can surely have a life outside of photography, but making pictures, and making a career out if it is my ultimate goal.

Any advice for others on how to stay motivated/focused on achieving their goals?

Don’t compare yourself to others, but it’s okay to use a little competitive motivation to your advantage. I understand that not all creatives are surrounded by a group of peers that they admire - but instead of getting down on yourself about the accomplishments of others, use it to inspire yourself to do better and keep working hard. I know that whenever I feel I’m in any sort of slump, if I just keep pushing through it I’ll always come out on top with something to show for it.

One of my favorite things about Los Angeles are all the good old diners. Maybe it’s the Reno girl still inside me, but I love a great greasy spoon - for breakfast, lunch, or a late night after-hours trip.

It’s always a pleasure working with Whitney from Myrtle, a great boutique shop in Echo Park, Los Angeles. For this Spring lookbook I wanted to challenge myself, and have some fun shooting with only the Lensbaby “Spark” lens. Great group of ladies made for a great day in the park!
